A longtime school volunteer is pursuing teacher certification with Talent Together, driven by a passion to support students facing challenges she once experienced

Charity Murph has committed over 15 years to the field of education. Her journey began with volunteering in the classrooms of her children’s schools, especially in preschool and elementary school. Her own experiences as a shy child who wanted to excel academically motivated her to support students struggling with similar feelings. Now, she is embracing opportunities for growth as an educator while pursuing teacher certification through Talent Together.

How did you start your career in education?

My entry into education started with volunteering at my children’s schools. I began by assisting in classrooms and collaborating with teachers. Being around passionate educators made the idea of becoming a teacher appealing. Reflecting on my own shyness as a child, I felt compelled to help students who might be feeling anxious or reluctant.

What has your experience been like as an apprentice teacher?

Co-teaching with a mentor teacher has provided a valuable learning experience. It allowed me to teach while receiving constructive feedback, while my mentor offered guidance when necessary. The program connected my university coursework with practical teaching experiences.

What lessons have you learned from your mentor teacher?

My mentor teacher has shown me how to address the needs of all students, whether they are high achievers, performing at grade level, or require extra support. Key lessons include classroom management techniques and keeping students engaged in learning throughout the day. Observing the operation of a well-structured classroom and balancing different educational needs has been incredibly beneficial.

What are your long-term goals in education?

My immediate goal is to become a certified teacher, but I also aspire to become a principal in the future. My focus is on making a significant impact in education, particularly in Detroit, where there is great potential for positive change.

How are you applying your education to your current role?

The skills and strategies I am acquiring in my master’s program are being applied directly in my work as an academic interventionist. There is a strong connection between my academic studies and the responsibilities I hold in my role, creating a cohesive learning experience.

Registered Apprenticeships

A registered apprenticeship is a key part of the Talent Together experience. Completing a registered apprenticeship is an opportunity to obtain paid work experience and gain classroom instruction while a teacher candidate completes their final year of coursework.
