Can you tell us what drew you to special education?
When I moved to the Upper Peninsula in 2019, I got a job as a special education paraprofessional and quickly fell in love with the field. I’ve always felt passionate about being an advocate for kids in special education because they often get the raw end of the deal. It’s rewarding to be on their side, helping them navigate through a system that sometimes overlooks their needs. I started working as a long-term substitute teacher in a self-contained classroom which was tough to staff. It took a special kind of person to work in that environment, and I felt that I was the right fit. Eventually, I got the chance to apply for Talent Together, which led to my transition into a special education apprentice teacher position.
How has Talent Together removed barriers to becoming a teacher?
One of the biggest barriers I faced was financing my education while supporting my son at Michigan Tech. I often wondered, ‘How am I going to manage this financially?’ The beauty of it is that Talent Together pays for my education. I don’t know how I would have navigated this without their assistance.
How did Northern Michigan University (NMU) play a role in your development?
NMU has been fantastic. The professors and advisors are always there to help, whether it’s answering questions or offering advice. One professor even offered to meet me for coffee to chat about anything I needed. I feel lucky to have such a strong network at NMU who go out of their way to support students. One of the highlights for me was a professor who sent me an opportunity to work at a cybersecurity camp. I never would have considered it, but I applied and had an amazing experience. It gave me the chance to work with kids on campus for two weeks.
What advice do you have for other teacher candidates?
It’s all about balance—managing time and setting a schedule. If you need help, reach out to people, whether it’s professors or Talent Together staff, because everyone is here to help you. There’s a team behind you, and that’s made it a lot easier for me.
