What made you decide to transition from a behavior specialist to a teacher?
I knew I wanted to be a teacher years ago, after college. There were no jobs back then, so I settled on being a behavior specialist. I loved it but knew it was time to advance myself. I felt like I could do more—I could give more to the kids.
How has Talent Together helped you become a teacher?
The biggest barrier for me was the cost of going back to school. You guys are helping us pay for and get this degree. Without that, I wouldn’t have been able to go to school and work full-time. I wouldn’t be where I am now.
What support did you receive from your mentor teacher?
My mentor teacher was the right person for me. We would sit down and talk, and that was what I needed—just that reassurance, those conversations. Now we’re really good friends, and she is right down the hallway. I still learn from her every day.
What was an example of how your mentor teacher helped you refine your teaching practice?
One of the biggest things I needed to work on was the use of fillers when speaking. At first, I didn’t even realize I was doing it, but my mentor would mark how many times I used them and ask me to consider what I could say instead. She pointed out that students catch on to these things, and those filler words can take away precious learning time. I appreciated her feedback because it was something I could actively work on. It was a small but impactful change that made me more aware of how I communicate in the classroom.
What advice do you have for future Teacher Candidates?
Trust your mentor teacher. They know what they’re talking about. Also, you’re going to be busy, so make sure to schedule time for yourself, your family, and maybe a night out. It’s demanding, but in the end, it is so rewarding.
