Apprentice teacher highlights how wraparound support has helped her grow.

Elizabeth Boznango is a dedicated professional with over 22 years of experience in education. After years as a paraprofessional, she is now pursuing her dream of becoming a teacher through the Talent Together program. Currently in her final year of coursework at Western Michigan University (WMU), Elizabeth is already working in a new role as an apprentice teacher and is excited to lead her own special education classroom this fall.

What inspired you to apply to Talent Together?

I’ve always wanted to become a teacher, but I never knew it would be possible financially. I’d also say my mom was a big influence—she was the one who pushed me to be a teacher years ago. She passed away, and after that, my motivation faded, but I still worked in the school system. Now, I feel like I’m picking up where she wanted me to go.

What was it like returning to school after so many years?

The last time I went to school was in 1995 when I got my bachelor’s degree, so it had been 29 years. Starting again was challenging, especially adapting to online and asynchronous learning. But WMU helped me a lot. They structured the classes so I could focus on one at a time, which fit my learning style. And the professors were understanding, even offering resubmissions when most of us missed something. It was a learning process.

Describe a time Talent Together supported you.

When I was working on my admissions essay, I reached out to my Success Navigator, Chad, because I was struggling with what to write. Chad helped me talk through it. It was mostly my idea, but he guided me, which gave me the confidence I needed. It reassured me that Talent Together would always be supportive in big and small ways.

My Educator Development Specialist, Kim, has also helped me. Her advice about having a growth mindset has been crucial. I learned how to expand my perspective, which has helped me feel more prepared to grow as an educator.

What has been most meaningful to you in your work with students over the years?

I love the relationships. That’s hands down what keeps me going. Just knowing that the students trust you, those candid moments, the laughs—it’s priceless. I’ve worked with some nonverbal kids, and over time, seeing them become more verbal is amazing. After being in East Lansing since 2019, I watched students I’d supported graduate, and that’s always heartbreaking but also rewarding. Seeing their progress, even in small ways, makes it all worth it.

What advice would you give to others like you who are considering returning to school after a long break?

It’s about keeping a positive mindset and being open to encouragement. Talent Together and my post-secondary institution have been there for me, and I’d tell others to lean on those supports.

Registered Apprenticeships

A registered apprenticeship is a key part of the Talent Together experience. Completing a registered apprenticeship is an opportunity to obtain paid work experience and gain classroom instruction while a teacher candidate completes their final year of coursework.
