Donille Cabanaw began her journey in education as a paraeducator at Dexter Community School District, where she quickly discovered her passion for teaching and her desire to lead a classroom of her own. Through dedication, hands-on experience, and a deep commitment to student success, she pursued her teaching certification and graduated from Lake Superior State University in May 2025. Now fully prepared and inspired by the mentors who guided her along the way, Donille is ready to take the next step —bringing a student-centered approach to her own classroom.

What inspired you to pursue a career in education?

When my daughter started kindergarten, I realized I wanted to build a career within the school system. That moment helped shape the path for my future. While working as a paraeducator and preschool teacher, I discovered how much I loved working with students. It didn’t take long for me to know I wanted to take the next step—return to school and work toward having a classroom of my own. I truly enjoyed what I was doing, and I knew I was ready to do even more.

What challenges previously stopped you from becoming a teacher?

I had already begun pursuing my education before joining Talent Together, but balancing the cost of school, raising my children, and paying for childcare was a lot. When I learned about Talent Together, I immediately knew it was the best path for me to earn my degree. It offered the support I needed to continue my journey without the financial strain.

How did the apprenticeship impact you?

I began my apprenticeship in the fall of 2024 in a third-grade classroom, and I truly appreciated the opportunity to experience the full school year from start to finish. The mentorship, exposure to assessments, and insight into pacing helped me gain a clear understanding of what it takes to successfully manage a classroom. I feel this experience provided me with all the tools I need to confidently enter the field this fall and lead a classroom of my own.

What support has Talent Together provided during this journey?

I knew I wanted to earn my teacher certification, but I was struggling to figure out how to make that happen. Talent Together helped remove the financial barriers that were standing in my way. I’ve learned so much this year from my mentor teacher Betsy Schmidt—she’s a fantastic teacher. I truly believe we made a great team. She consistently demonstrates what it means to care deeply about her students, their well-being, their learning, and ensuring they truly understand the material. She supports them every step of the way. I’ve also gained so much from everyone at Lake Superior State University—from the teachers to the administrators.

What advice do you have for teacher candidates

It’s important to take feedback and begin applying it immediately. Simply receiving constructive criticism without sitting down to reflect on it and actively making changes doesn’t lead to growth. I believe being open to feedback and using it intentionally is key to becoming a better teacher. This entire year has been incredibly valuable in preparing me for success in the classroom. While I have a background in teaching, working with third graders is very different from teaching preschoolers. That said, this experience has equipped me with the tools and confidence I need to move forward effectively.

What advice do you have for individuals thinking of applying?

Talent Together was truly a life-changing experience for me. I always tell others—if you’re considering furthering your education, visit their website, check out the next cohort, and apply. It can really lighten the load when it comes to the financial stress of school, especially concerns about affordability or taking on more student debt. This is an incredible opportunity, and while we have access to resources like this, we should absolutely take full advantage of them. effectively.
