Long Term Substitute Teacher

With a dream to become a teacher since 4th grade, John is turning that dream into reality.
John recently earned his Bachelor’s degree in Multidisciplinary Studies from Siena Heights University and is now continuing his journey toward becoming a certified teacher through #T.E.A.C.H. and our registered apprenticeship program. His passion for education was sparked in 4th grade by the impactful teachers who helped shape his path. Now, he’s committed to paying it forward—bringing that same care, encouragement, and inspiration to his own students.
What inspired you to pursue a career in education?
I’ve always had a passion for helping others learn and grow. As a student, I was lucky to have teachers who believed in me and made learning feel exciting and meaningful. Their support and encouragement planted a seed in me. Over time, I realized that teaching isn’t just about academics—it’s about building relationships, shaping futures, and making a real difference in people’s lives. That’s what inspired me to pursue this path. I have had some memorable teachers that made huge impacts on my life growing up. The first time I had a male teacher was in 4th Grade. It was at that point that I wanted to be a teacher, but I didn’t know a specific grade level. When I was in 7th and 8th Grade, I had two of the most patient and caring teachers that were always there for their students. At that point, I knew that I wanted to be as compassionate towards teaching as they were. I will never forget Mr. Krach, Mr. Rosin, and Mr. Hurd as they were the ones that were always there for their students and wanted them to do their best. I love being in the classroom, and I will say something that will remind me of them, and I can’t help but smile because of the impact that they had on me.
What inspired you to apply to the Talent Together Program?
When I first found out about Talent Together and read the website’s information on the logistics of how the program works. I immediately filled out the form with all my information and submitted it (without hesitation).
How did your time at Siena Heights University Impact you?
The class that had an impactful moment was a class entitled “Living the Liberal Arts”. This class allowed me and pushed me to be creative in ways that I haven’t been comfortable with. The professor always gave me positive feedback when I tried a new form of creativity for assignments. She also applauded me multiple times on wanting to be a teacher. Professor McCartney stated ” Keep Going, John! This world needs more teachers like you” as well as “I am so excited for the 3rd to 5th grade world that gets to have you as a teacher!” This was motivation to keep going, and keep my eye on the overall end goal with professors like her to compliment and encourage me all 7 weeks.
What are you most excited about as you enter your registered apprenticeship year?
Even though I was a long term substitute teacher this school year, I am excited to actually receive feedback and grow into a more effective teacher each passing day. I am excited to learn how to stay organized as a teacher as well. I’m most excited about building meaningful relationships with students and being part of their growth journey. There’s something incredibly rewarding about seeing students have those “aha” moments. I’m also looking forward to collaborating with experienced educators, learning from their wisdom, and continually evolving as a teacher. This apprenticeship is a chance to dive into the real-world classroom experience and start making an impact right away.
