Ken's journey to becoming an educator!

Ken’s path to the classroom has been anything but traditional—but every step led him closer to where he’s meant to be. He began with a degree in Theatre & Entertainment Arts from Northern Michigan University, followed by careers in law enforcement, funeral service, and over a decade as a school resource officer at the Hannahville Indian Community. With an inspiration to make an even greater impact in children’s lives Ken is well on his way to becoming a certified educator.

What inspired you to pursue a career in education?

As a school resource officer, I had regular interactions with students—but many were tied to law enforcement. When I brought the DARE program back to Hannahville, I got a taste of being in the classroom again and realized I wanted more of that. I wanted to be with students day in and day out, building real relationships and watching their growth over a full school year. Becoming a teacher felt like the natural next step.

How has Talent Together Supported you on this journey?

The resources Talent Together provides are truly incredible. When I was exploring different programs, their website immediately stood out—something just clicked. It was clear they had it together, and that first impression held true. What really sets this program apart is the layered support—from Talent Together itself, your partner university, and the leadership in your school. You’re set up to succeed from day one, and that kind of support makes all the difference.

How has your apprenticeship journey impacted you?

Completing my apprenticeship at Bark River-Harris Community School District has been an incredible experience. I started subbing here last year, and when I explored Talent Together, it just made sense to reach out to the superintendent. He was fully supportive and helped make it possible for me to join the program. I’ve spent the year learning alongside Cheri Robitaille, the fourth-grade teacher here, and having a full year with one mentor has been invaluable. From open house to the last weeks of school, I’ve seen what it truly takes to guide a classroom. The support I’ve received has been amazing, and I know I’ve built relationships that will last throughout my career.

Is there a memorable moment from your apprenticeship that you would like to share?

Most of this year has been incredibly meaningful, but one moment really stuck with me. I’ve always believed in building strong relationships with students, and early on, I connected with a quiet young man who shares my love of film. One day, I jokingly asked him if he’d invite me to the Academy Awards when he makes his first movie. A few weeks ago, he looked at me and said, “Mr. Taylor, how many movies do I have to make to keep you alive forever?”

That moment reminded me why I’m here. It’s those small, sincere connections that tell me I’m exactly where I’m meant to be.

What advice do you have for teacher candidates currently in the Talent Together program?

This journey isn’t easy—but nothing truly worthwhile ever is. It’s going to challenge you, but it’s also going to change you in the best ways. Don’t give up. And if along the way you realize it’s not for you, that’s okay, too—because at the end of the day, it’s about being the best we can be for the kids.

Talent Together has been an incredible experience for me. It’s a real-world, practical look at what this career demands. And if you can make it through this program, you can absolutely do this.

What would you say to someone who is considering applying to Talent Together?

If you’re considering a program to become a teacher, I can say from personal experience—Talent Together has been one of the most incredible journeys of any career I’ve had. I’ve felt more supported here than anywhere else, and the experience has been overwhelmingly positive.

What really stands out is how personal it all feels. You’re not just a number. The team truly gets to know you and cares about your success. I still remember Amy Peterson recalling our very first conversation—and that level of connection, especially with how many people they work with, is impressive. Both Amy and Chelsea Norton, who I’ve worked with most, have been absolutely wonderful. If you’re ready to pursue your passion for teaching, Talent Together is the program to do it through.
