A special education paraprofessional in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula pursuing teaching with support from Talent Together and NMU.

After relocating to Michigan’s Upper Peninsula in 2019, Dawn Benner began her career as a special education paraprofessional and quickly discovered her passion for the field. Now, with the support of Talent Together and Northern Michigan University (NMU), she is on her path to becoming a teacher.

What drew you to special education?

My journey began when I started working as a special education paraprofessional after moving to the Upper Peninsula. I developed a strong passion for advocating for students with disabilities, who often face numerous challenges. It’s fulfilling to support them as they navigate a system that can sometimes overlook their unique needs. Later, I took on a long-term substitute teaching role in a self-contained classroom that was difficult to staff. It required a special kind of dedication, and I felt I was the right fit. This experience led me to apply for Talent Together, allowing me to transition into a special education apprentice teacher position.

How has Talent Together helped you overcome barriers to becoming a teacher?

One major challenge I faced was financing my education while also supporting my son at Michigan Tech. I often wondered how I would balance these responsibilities. Fortunately, Talent Together covers my educational expenses, which has been a tremendous relief. Their support has made all the difference in my journey.

How has Northern Michigan University (NMU) contributed to your development?

NMU has been an incredible support system. The professors and advisors are always available to help with questions or provide guidance. One professor even offered to meet for coffee to discuss my needs. I feel fortunate to have such a strong network at NMU, where faculty members genuinely care about students. A particularly valuable experience for me was when a professor shared an opportunity to work at a cybersecurity camp. I applied, not having considered it before, and it turned out to be an amazing experience working with kids on campus for two weeks.

What advice do you have for other teacher candidates?

Finding balance is crucial—managing your time and establishing a productive schedule is key. Don’t hesitate to reach out for help when you need it, whether from professors or Talent Together staff. There’s a supportive team behind you, and that support has made my journey much easier.
