What challenges did you face in becoming a teacher in Michigan?

Although I already had my bachelor’s degree, I needed to complete additional classes to obtain full certification. I was actively looking for ways to achieve this when I learned about Talent Together, which came to me at just the right moment.

How did you first learn about Talent Together?

I discovered Talent Together through the district where I worked. After moving to Michigan in August 2021, I started as a special education paraprofessional. I worked in that role for two years, and during that time, my principal, HR, and others were aware of my goal to become a certified teacher. When they received the Talent Together newsletter, they shared it with me, and I applied right away.

Have any professors significantly influenced you?

Yes, definitely. One professor who stands out is Arnaldo Melendez at Davenport University. I took two of his classes, one focusing on including kids with special needs. He provided valuable resources that enhanced my knowledge and had a positive impact on both my academic and personal growth.

What skills have you concentrated on while preparing to teach in Michigan?

I have needed to adapt to teaching in diverse environments, which was new to me since I hadn’t experienced such diversity in my previous teaching. I have gained considerable knowledge in this area through my classes, but I still see it as a growth opportunity, especially since the school I will teach next year is highly diverse.

Can you share your apprenticeship experience?

My mentor teacher, Genea Donato, has been incredibly supportive. She was always patient and willing to explain concepts, no matter how many times I asked. She provided me with hands-on classroom experience, allowing me to take full responsibility for teaching for a few months and giving me valuable feedback, which was instrumental in my development. I can’t say enough good things about her support.

What are your hopes and goals as a teacher?

I aspire to create a positive and welcoming learning environment for my students. My goal is to ensure each student feels valued, respected, and supported so they can reach their full potential.
